We all recall the video disaster from last week. It took several days to solve the problem, but because you'll come up against this kind of situation frequently, here's what happened. PicturePackage, the software program that lets me download videos from my Sony Handycam, turns out to have a glitch that required me to download a new version (1.8 vs. 1.5). If you are having trouble with software, simply Google the problem, and a solution is likely available.
However, the USB software that allows me to download the video does not seem to work, and there is no repair on Google. The device was not even on my computer when I checked properties, and would not upload to my computer when I ran the software again.
The solution was to connect a "firewire" 1394 cable from camera to the computer, when I was able to download to either the Windows Movie Maker program or the Sony Picture Package program. I chose movie maker because it allowed me to download the entire clip at once for uploading to the editing program. Picture Package will do it in pieces.
Here's the finished product:

Photo editing programs
Your Microsoft package comes with a decent photo editing program, Office Picture Manager, which allows you to compress the photo for printing, web use and emailing as an attachment.
Your camera may come with its own editing program, such as this from Nikon.

Adobe photoshop is versatile
Photoshop is what most publications and web designers use when editing photos. The nuances of the program are too complex to be discussed here today, but if you need it, you can buy versions of it online from outlets that sell for much less than Adobe.
